1-in-3 Southwest Florida COVID-19 Deaths Linked to Facilities
May 1, 2020 | Category: Nursing Home Neglect/Abuse | ShareThe News-Press reported on Saturday, April 25, 2020 that 1-in-3 COVID-19 deaths in Southwest Florida are linked to nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and long-term care facilities. The Florida State Department of Health (DOH) released data showing 281 of the 987 deaths were in facilities.
President and CEO of The American College of Health Care Administrators Bill McGinley said, “Nursing homes are a Petri dish.”
The DOH report released on Thursday, April 23, 2020 said the Southwest Florida 4-county area showed the following results to date:
- Charlotte County had 4 out of the 12 deaths of county residents, or 33 percent, associated with long-term care facilities. Six facilities were listed as having 44 cases of COVID-19.
- Collier County had 5 out of 14 deaths, or 36 percent related to facilities.
- Lee County had 10 out of 32 deaths, or 31 percent, related to facilities.
- Hendry County had 2 deaths related to facilities.
Nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and long-term care facilities often place residents in shared rooms, which gives them the potential of contracting COVID-19. Many residents are also immune-compromised, which makes them more apt to get, and pass on, diseases, such as COVID-19. Staff members taking care of residents have also contracted COVID-19.
The News-Press report said that Florida facilities are not as transparent as some in other states. For example, New York lists the name of the nursing home, the county, and how many people died there. The State of Florida reports facility deaths; the facilities currently do not report COVID-19 deaths.
Long-term care facilities in Florida are required to report to family members or guardians when a resident or staff member in a long-term care facility tests positive for a COVID-19 infection.
