2019 Holiday Party Safety

December is a month of celebration and parties as many enjoy Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), Christmas Day (Dec. 25), Chanukah (Dec. 22-30), or Kwanzaa (Dec. 26-Jan. 1).
As we make plans, it is important to include safety and not drink and drive. Many people believe they can enjoy alcoholic beverages and still be okay to drive. This is not the case. Just a few drinks can make a person legally drunk, and it can happen even more quickly depending on a person’s body structure and weight. Be sure to have a non-drinking designated driver before the festivities begin.
“Even if you and your other party-goers are careful to not drink and drive, party-goers attending other events may not be so careful. It is important to drive undistracted and focused,” said Randall Spivey, Fort Myers DUI Accident Attorney of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.
There are ways you can protect yourself from other drunk and/or drugged drivers on the roads. One way is to be a defensive driver. Should you see a driver speeding and/or swerving on the road, try to avoid them and take evasive action.
Leaving a party very late at night or in the early hours of the morning may prove more dangerous than leaving earlier. If you leave during these hours, please be sure to watch for dangerous drivers so you can avoid them. Should you be injured in an accident caused by another driver, be sure to take care of your medical needs first and call 911.
2018 was a very dangerous holiday season in Florida. In one week, there were nearly a dozen deaths. The Florida Highway Patrol investigators responded to nearly ten crashes or pedestrian accidents with cars in Palm Beach County, the Treasure Coast and Highlands County. Some of the crashes were hit and runs.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) said that drunk driving crashes increase dramatically every holiday season. More than 1,000 people died in drunk-driving crashes from 6:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve through New Year’s Eve 2018. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are so dangerous that almost half of all traffic deaths on those days are caused by drunk driving.
