September 18, 2019 | Category: DUI Accidents | ShareIn an article titled Cannabis Effects on Driving Skills for the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, Rebecca Hartman and Marilyn Huestis said cannabis is the most prevalent illicit drug identified in impaired drivers. Furthermore, epidemiologic data show that the risk of involvement in a motor vehicle accident increases approximately 2-fold after cannabis smoking.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, drugged driving is driving a vehicle while impaired due to the intoxicating effects of recent drug use. It can make driving a car unsafe, just like driving after drinking alcohol. Drugged driving puts the driver, passengers, and others who share the road at serious risk,” according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
DrugAbuse.org has important points regarding driving under the influence it would like to share with everyone:
- Use of illicit drugs or misuse of prescription drugs can make driving a car unsafe, just like driving after drinking alcohol.
- In 2017, 21.4 million people aged 16 or older drove under the influence of alcohol in the past year, and 12.8 million drove under the influence of illicit drugs.
- It's hard to measure how many crashes are caused by drugged driving, but estimates show that almost 44 percent of drivers in fatal car crashes tested positive for drugs.
- Driving under the influence of marijuana, opioids and alcohol can have profound effects on driving.
- People who use drugs and alcohol should develop social strategies to prevent them from getting behind the wheel of a car while impaired.
The Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) announced that September 2019 is the 30th anniversary of its National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. This is a national observation “to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life.”
Every year, NAADAC selects a new focus and theme to share successes of treatment and recovery. The 2019 recovery month theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger.”
