2020’s Red-Light Running Incidents
February 3, 2021 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareOn December 29, 2020, Verra Mobility, a leader in smart transportation, released videos of 2020’s worst red-light runners. The footage showed collisions captured by red-light safety cameras across the country and showed that crashes continue to present a threat, even with fewer people on the road.
Red-light running happens when a vehicle enters an intersection any time after the signal light has turned red.
Both the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reported on red-light running in the last two years.
AAA reported that running red lights is at a 10-year high with at least two people killed every day and many left with serious injuries.
The IIHS reported 846 people died and 139,000 were injured in crashes that involved red-light running in 2018. Many of the deaths were those of pedestrians and bicyclists. The red-light drivers who were involved in the 2018 fatal red-light crashes were more likely to be male and younger and have had prior crashes or alcohol-impaired driving convictions. They also were less likely to have valid driver’s licenses.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety did a national telephone survey in 2018. The survey showed that 85 percent of drivers said it is very, or extremely, dangerous to speed through a red light, but 31 percent reported doing so in the previous 30 days (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 2019.)
During National Stop on Red Week in August 2020, Cape Coral Police Department’s Master Sgt. Patrick O’Grady told ABC-7 News, “Not only are you putting your life in danger, but you’re putting the life of anybody else who’s on the roadway in danger.”
