6 Tips for a Safe 2021 Labor Day Weekend
August 30, 2021 | Category: Automobile Accidents, Motorcycle Accidents, Truck Accidents | ShareThe National Safety Council (NSC) reports that many Americans choose to travel by car over holiday weekends, and vehicular travel has the highest fatality rate of any form of transportation based on fatalities per passenger mile.
Labor Day Weekend 2021 is a 3.25-day weekend starting at 6 p.m. Friday, September 3, until midnight Monday, September 6, and is one of the most dangerous holidays weekends of the year.
To help ensure safety, the NSC recommends drivers:
- Make sure every passenger buckles up on every trip.
- Designate an alcohol and drug-free driver or arrange alternate transportation.
- Get plenty of sleep and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue.
- Never use a cell phone behind the wheel, even hands-free.
- Stay engaged in teens’ driving habits, as teens are three times as likely to crash as more experienced drivers.
- Learn about the vehicle's safety systems and how to use them. NSC’s “My Car Does What” can help drivers understand features such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning systems, and backup cameras.
Even though 2020 had less traffic, the number of Labor Day accidents did not diminish. One such accident was reported in South Central Florida Life. A person tragically died in a Port Saint Lucie accident when a sedan crossed over the center line and collided with a sports utility vehicle and a pick-up truck. Other drivers and passengers suffered injuries.
