7 New Year’s Resolutions to Avoid Florida Accidents in 2024
January 17, 2024 | Category: Automobile Accidents, Motorcycle Accidents, Truck Accidents | Share"It is that time of the year when many of us take stock of our lives and make new commitments for 2024 and forward. One of the commitments may be to be a better driver. The following 7 resolutions could be a great starting point,” said Florida Personal Injury Attorney Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.
- Eliminate distractions while driving.
- Thoroughly prepare for driving so as not to be hurried.
- Use turn signals.
- Avoid speeding by sticking to the speed limits.
- Avoid drowsy driving.
- Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Select designated drivers or driving services.
- Keep vehicles properly maintained.
Eliminate Distractions While Driving
There are many distractions when driving. From the modern world of texting and social media to reaching for items, eating and drinking, putting on makeup, brushing hair, talking on the phone, and rowdy passengers, there are many potentials for taking your eyes off the road.
Thoroughly Prepare for Driving So as Not to Be Hurried
Consider checking the weather and traffic conditions before getting behind the wheel. Also, remember, schools and businesses have specific starting times and traffic may be congested.
Use Turn Signals
Accidents often happen when drivers do not use their turn signals. Section 316.155 of the Florida Statutes requires drivers who are turning right or left or changing lanes to signal their intention for at least 100 feet before turning or changing lanes.
Avoid Speeding
Drivers frequently speed on Florida’s roadways exceeding posted speed limits. Experts say that speeding contributes to one-quarter of Florida’s accidents. When drivers travel above posted speed limits, they have less time to react to situations and come to safe stops.
Avoid Drowsy Driving
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that drowsy driving is preventable. Sleep deprivation may be due to late or long work shifts, being out late with friends, walking crying babies, or long, monotonous drives. All the negative outcomes are the same and include impaired cognition and performance, motor vehicle crashes, and health consequences.
Avoid Driving Under the Influence
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), drinking, drugs, and driving do not mix. “Drugs and alcohol negatively alter important brain functions you need for driving safely: judgment, motor skills, memory, and reaction time. Don't drink or use drugs and drive. If you are planning to drink, have a pre-designated driver or ride-share service.”
Keep Vehicles Properly Maintained
Maintaining your vehicle is important because it is less likely to break down. Mechanical failure when driving, such as brake failure or blown tires, can cause accidents.
