Auto Accidents and Pregnant Women: Understanding the Risks
March 24, 2015 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareTraveling on Florida roadways in an automobile can be a tricky task. Every day, individuals hope to make it to their destinations safe and sound, and while many of them do arrive without problem, some individuals experience accidents.
No matter if the accident is a minor fender bender or a serious wreck resulting in substantial injuries, the experience can be both frightening and traumatic for all involved. This is especially true for accident victims who are pregnant at the time of the collision.
Ft. Myers personal injury attorney Randall Spivey has helped numerous accident victims seek justice and obtain the compensation needed to take care of a variety of things, including past and future medical bills, past and future lost income and pain and suffering.
But when accident victims are pregnant at the time of the accident, the last thing that should be on her mind is a financial payoff -- her primary focus should be on obtaining proper and timely medical care after the accident.
The Risks Pregnant Women Face When Involved in Auto Accidents
Pregnant women should be aware that any sudden stop, whether it occurs during an actual crash or from hard braking to avoid a collision, can be enough motion to hurt a baby. It is not necessary for you to experience a blow to the abdomen for the fetus to be injured and even impacts that occur at low speeds can lead to injuries, particularly if the woman’s pregnancy is deemed to be “high risk.”
Expectant mothers should also note that the after effects of collisions can place them and their unborn child at greater risks for a variety of problems, to include pre-term labor complications, slow baby growth, pre-eclampsia and elevated blood pressure and stress levels. That said, it is crucial for pregnant women to visit a doctor right away after an accident, even if you believe the incident was not severe enough to cause problems for you or your baby.
What Should You Do After an Auto Accident?
Regardless of whether an accident victim is pregnant or not, it is always a good idea to seek medical attention as soon as possible after a collision, but it is particularly important for pregnant women to do so. There are a few symptoms that expectant mothers should watch for after an accident, such as severe headaches, pain in the abdomen or shoulders, dizziness, unusual vaginal bleeding and/or discharge and the baby’s movements change.
At some point, you will likely need to file an insurance claim and/or a personal injury claim, but those things can be taken care of after you have ensured that you and your unborn baby have been properly cared for. When the ambulance/paramedics arrive, you should make certain to tell them that you are pregnant (particularly if you’re not obviously showing) so they can conduct a series of appropriate checks on you and the baby.
