Bicycle Safety in Florida Is a Problem

January 2, 2013 | Category: Bike Accidents | Share

The League of American Bicyclists reported, based on the number of fatalities and bicyclists, “Florida is one of the least safe places for bicyclists in the country." In May 2012 they listed Florida as number 21 in their annual ranking of "bicycle friendly states", down from number 7 in 2011.  Rankings are based on a combination of fatalities, legislation and enforcement, education and bike infrastructure as well as other factors.

The December 10, 2012  Washington Postreported Federal safety officials said,"…deaths of bicyclists rose sharply last year even as total traffic fatalities dropped to their lowest level since 1949."  In an analysis of 2011 traffic deaths by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, bicyclist deaths jumped 8.7 percent.

Jonathan Adkins, Deputy Executive Director of the Florida Governor's Highway Safety Association said in the Washington Post article, "The increase in bicycle deaths probably reflects more people riding bicycles to work and for pleasure.  Our culture is beginning to move away from driving and toward healthier and greener modes of transportation.  We need to be able to accommodate all these forms of transportation safely."

Florida does have laws which must be followed for safely riding bicycles. It's important to become familiar with them.  Following are some resources for both motorists and bicyclists."
