Blind Spots and Motorcycle Accidents

January 29, 2021 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | Share

Florida’s beautiful weather provides ample time for motorcyclists to get out on the road and enjoy riding. The number of registered motorcycles in the state of Florida averaged 592,267 in 2019, second only to California with 808,377, according to a Fort Myers motorcycle accident attorney.

Blind Spots & Motorcycle Accidents - Spivey LawBecause of their size, motorcycles are very vulnerable when they are in accidents. They are particularly vulnerable when involved in blind-spot accidents, sometimes referred to as no-zone accidents.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 840,000 blind-spot-related accidents occur every year.

Randall Spivey, Fort Myers motorcycle accident attorney with Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. says that Florida’s right-of-way laws provide for a duty of care for all drivers to avoid accidents. A motorcycle operator who fails to check his/her blind spot will be at-fault in a collision. It is important for motorists to watch out for motorcyclists and share the road responsibly.

Every vehicle has a blind spot. Blind spots are even bigger for larger vehicles, such as buses and trucks. Should a driver turn, or change lanes, directly into the path of a motorcyclist, there may be a serious accident. To help prevent motorcycle blind-spot accidents, motorists should exercise a high level of care when driving and adhere to the following tips:

  • Adjust the rearview mirror so the rear window is totally framed.
  • Adjust side-view mirrors so they point toward the blind spots.
  • Newer vehicles may have blind-spot detection safety features which typically are lights that illuminate on the side mirror if an object is in the blind spot. Drivers should check these lights, or if they have an older vehicle without this feature, look over the shoulder before changing lanes or merging into traffic.
  • Use the blinker so other motorists can anticipate any actions.
  • Stay alert and aware of motorcycles and other motorists that may travel in blind spots.
