Call For Action - Hancock Bridge Parkway Accidents Rising
March 26, 2018 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareIn one year, from March 2017 to March 2018, Cape Coral police officers responded to 211 crashes along Hancock Bridge Parkway. These crashes do not include accidents happening outside the city limits, according to NBC-2 News on Tuesday, March 6.
Neighbors along the parkway are calling for action:
“Every single day there’s a fender bender. There are people that have been killed on this road,” said the mother of a teenager hit on his bicycle. “I think if they did some roundabouts, it would be helpful."
Another woman who lives yards away from where a rollover accident took place said that speeding appears to be the biggest issue along the road. “I’ve had several accidents in my yard,” she said. “They just missed my house by inches.”
Speeding is blamed for more than 10,000 deaths in the U.S. each year, according to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). In Southwest Florida, speeding, along with drunk driving, rank as the most common causes of fatal car accidents.
The Cape Coral Police Department issues a daily traffic enforcement update “to emphasize the importance of obeying traffic laws to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and deaths” on Cape Coral roads. These increased traffic enforcement activities focus on moving violations such as speeding, red-light and stop sign violations and aggressive driving or criminal violations such as DUI and reckless driving.
Speed limit changes in the state of Florida have been considered by the state legislature over recent years. In 2014 a Florida bill to raise the speed limit on interstates for cars and trucks from 70 mph to 75 mph was discussed and rejected. On December 6, 2017 the Pensacola News Journal reported that the speed limit on I-110 would increase from 55 mph to 65 mph.
The NHTSA reminds drivers that speeding is dangerous. It affects the driver’s safety “even when you are driving at the speed limit but too fast for road conditions, such as during bad weather, when a road is under repair, or in an area at night that is not well lit.”
When drivers speed, they are doing more than just breaking the law, says the NHTSA. They are endangering others including other motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. The consequences are numerous:
- Greater potential for loss of vehicle control;
- Reduced effectiveness of occupant protection equipment;
- Increased stopping distance after the driver perceives a danger;
- Increased degree of crash severity leading to more severe injuries;
- Economic implications of a speed-related crash; and
- Increased fuel consumption/cost.
