Celebrate July 4th Responsibly

Celebrate July 4th ResponsiblyAccording to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD):

  • There are 300,000 incidents of drunk driving a day in the United States. “Adults drank too much and drove about 121 million times per year - over 300,000 incidents of drinking and driving a day.”
  • There are 10,265 deaths a year. “That’s 28 deaths every day and one death every 51 minutes. Each and every one of them 100% preventable.”
  • There are 290,000 injuries per year. “290,000 injuries per year means exponentially more friends, family members, and loved ones, unnecessarily affected by this preventable crime.”

MADD says that the days surrounding and including the 4th of July are among the deadliest because of drunk drivers. MADD urges the public to plan ahead and designate non-drinking drivers when preparing for celebrations.

“Celebrating our nation’s independence with backyard barbecues, fireworks displays, and other festivities should be fun, not dangerous,” said Lori Burke, Executive Director of MADD SW Florida. “Celebrate safely by designating a non-drinking driver every time plans include alcohol.”

The Cape Coral Police Department (CCPD) reported that DUI arrests between July 4th and July 14th, 2019 showed five people with more than twice the legal limit, a driver who crashed multiple times and fled on foot into traffic, five which involved property damage, and at least one determined to be under the influence of drugs. (These do not include arrests made during a July 6th DUI checkpoint.)

CCPD says, “The easiest way to not get a DUI is to NOT drive impaired. If you are going out to partake in adult beverages, designate a sober driver or utilize an alternate form of transportation: Uber, Lyft, taxi, bus, etc. Don’t take the chance of ruining a life, including your own.”
