Chrysler Owners Beware! New Recalls
July 10, 2013 | Category: Defective Products, Unsafe Vehicles | ShareReuters is reporting that Chrysler issued new recalls July 3, 2013 affecting 840,000 vehicles mostly in the U.S. These recalls follow last month's recalls of 1.56 million Jeep Grand Cherokees and Jeep Libertys for potential fire danger in rear-end collisions because gas tanks were placed behind the rear bumpers and rear axles. The July 3rd recalls, Chrysler said, are for cars, SUVs and pickup trucks; cars because of an active-restraint headrest issue, minivans for possible malfunctioning side airbags and pickup trucks for electronic stability control software problems.
Headrests
The headrests are designed to move forward during rear-end vehicle crashes but may be unable to do so because of potentially faulty micro computer components. A micro computer component worldwide shortage resulted from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Chrysler will fix 2011-2013 Chrysler Sebrings, Chrysler 200s, Dodge Avengers and Jeep Libertys as well as 2011-2012 Dodge Nitro SUVs by upgrading power modules or "occupant restraint control modules" according to papers filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Airbags
2013 Dodge Caravans, Chrysler Town & Countrys, and Ram Cargo Vans have side airbags in which the software component was improperly programmed. This improper programming could affect the deployment of the airbags.
Electronic Stability Control Software
69,000, 2013 Ram 1500 pickup trucks, which have all-wheel drive, may have an electronic stability control software glitch, according to Chrysler. Dealers report that the electronic stability control lamps are illuminated which indicates the electronic stability control system is disabled.
"Properly working headrests, airbags and electronic stability controls are imperative to the safety of vehicle occupants should there be automobile accidents or truck accidents. Again, I urge owners of vehicles affected by these most recent recalls to take their vehicles in for service and have these issues fixed. For more information on recalls go to NHTSA Recalls.
