Collier County Launches Pedestrian/Bicycle Safety Campaign - Spivey LawIn a press release on January 2, 2020, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit (CCSO) announced its launch of a pedestrian and bicycle safety campaign that will begin this month to help deter pedestrian and bicycle accidents. It will concentrate its enforcement efforts through May 2020 in order “to protect the safety of these most vulnerable road users.” The CCSO will conduct high-visibility enforcement details at some locations where traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists have occurred.

CCSO said their enforcement efforts will be contracted with the University of North Florida in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation’s focused initiative to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. The goal is to increase awareness of, and compliance with, traffic laws that protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. CCSO says violations may result in warnings or citations, depending on the circumstances.

The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT’s) strategic highway safety plan defined a framework for the state’s pedestrian and bicycle strategic safety plan, along with implementation activities.

CCSO reminds drivers to always “obey speed limits, never drive impaired, and always watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.  Bicyclists should also obey traffic laws, ride in the direction of traffic, and use lights when riding at night. Pedestrians should cross in crosswalks or at intersections, obey pedestrian signals, and make sure they are visible to drivers when walking at night.”

“We represent those who have been injured or killed in all types of pedestrian or bicycle accidents in Florida.
