Common Preventable Injuries in Car Accidents

February 12, 2015 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

Automobile accidents are an unfortunate reality for many drivers in the Ft. Myers area and all throughout Florida. Ft. Myers personal injury attorney Randall Spivey has handled many motor vehicle accident cases and knows firsthand how a crash can change a victim’s life. Mr. Spivey notes that auto crashes can leave victims and their families with “a lifetime of pain and suffering, medical bills and lost wages.”

CarsDirect, a popular online car buying site, posted an article discussing the fact that many common injuries that occur during collisions are actually preventable. There are any number of injuries that can occur after a car accident, but there are ways to limit your chances and/or lessen the severity of the injury through the use of safety equipment that is contained in most vehicles, as well as certain other safe driving/riding techniques.

Injuries to the Legs, Knees and Feet

The article suggests that those riding in automobiles can lower the risk of injury to their knees, legs and feet by keeping those body parts positioned together, as opposed to having them in awkward angles. Amazingly, it is not uncommon to ride down a highway and see a passenger in a car, jeep or SUV with his or her feet propped up on the dashboard area instead of down on the floor of the automobile. If that vehicle gets into an accident at the time the passenger’s legs and feet are up, the injuries that could result may end up being much more serious than they would have been had the passenger kept those body parts down in a more appropriate position.

Brain, Head and Face Injuries

Certainly, accidents involving brain, head and face injuries are often quite serious. Brain injuries can include concussions and traumatic brain injuries that result in coma and/or loss of memory. Many of those types of injuries can be prevented through the use of front and side impact air bags. While it is true that not all cars are equipped with air bags, most recent models have at least front air bags that have proven to be very effective in preventing serious injuries to both passengers and drivers.

Passengers are also encouraged to learn to protect their faces and cover their heads in the event an accident does occur. Many people instinctively use their hands to cover their faces when they see a potentially harmful incident about to occur. But moving your hands and arms in a way that covers both the face and head can be a huge help with avoiding more catastrophic injuries.

Back and Neck Injuries

Back and neck injuries incurred from an accident can last for years after an automobile collision. Back injuries typically include slipped discs or other spine-related injuries, lower back injuries and minor sprains and fractures. Neck injuries can also include disc injuries, as well as whiplash. Drivers and passengers can better protect themselves by ensuring they wear their seatbelts and properly use any attached neck restraints and headrests.
