COVID-19 Causes American Crew Members to Be Blocked From Disembarking From Cruise Ships
May 11, 2020 | Category: COVID-19 Claims | ShareCBS News reported on April 29, 2020 that at least 9 American crew members of Holland America’s Oosterdam cruise ship were blocked from getting off in Los Angeles by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC has prohibited U.S. cruise ships from going out for the next three months. This action has left thousands of workers stranded at sea.
At least 132 other Americans are marooned on Carnival Cruise Line company cruise ships. Passengers were allowed to disembark, but not crew members, who have been quarantined for weeks.
"The fact that they won't let us off is extremely frustrating, irritating, especially for ships that just have crew members that have been quarantined for much longer than 14 days that have no COVID-19 cases," a crew member told CBS News. "We're just stuck here. It does feel like a prison sometimes ... I want to go home. I want to see my family."
The CDC’s order prohibits cruise ship workers from staying in a hotel, using public transportation, taking a commercial airline flight or interacting with the public for 14 days upon arrival on land, regardless of how long they were quarantined onboard.
