Cruise Lines Knowingly Set Sail During COVID-19 Pandemic
May 22, 2020 | Category: COVID-19 Claims | ShareA Wall Street Journal investigation found that cruise lines continued to fill their ships with passengers, even after they had ample evidence to believe their fleet of luxury liners was an incubator for COVID-19 since early March 2020. On or after March 4, the day of the first confirmed COVID-19 death of a cruising passenger, more than 100 voyages were launched.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that 17 of the vessels, which were on international voyages and had entered at least one U.S. port, carried people who tested positive for COVID-19 within two weeks of disembarking.
The Wall Street Journal also reported that cruise lines allowed passengers to disembark and return home, even after they knew some passengers had fallen ill or tested positive for the virus.
Communities in Iowa, Ohio, California, Minnesota, Florida, Hawaii and Puerto Rico traced either their first COVID-19 cases or an acceleration of local infections to cruise-ship travelers.
By March 13, the CDC linked cruise passengers to 17 percent of all reported COVID-19 cases in the U.S.
Carnival and other cruise lines are being investigated by the Coast Guard to determine whether they violated a federal law requiring them to report outbreaks of illness when they are approaching the United States.
“Cruise lines have a duty to warn current passengers and those embarking on cruises that it may have COVID-19 on board and positive cases. It is negligent for cruise line companies to continue ‘business as usual’ during a pandemic,” said Florida Personal Injury Lawyer Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. “Should you or a loved one be injured because of the negligence of a cruise line, after seeking medical attention, please contact our firm, we have an experienced legal team ready to assist you.
