Dangerous Golf Cart Accidents
November 8, 2021 | Category: Personal Injury | ShareGolf carts are a way of life in Florida. They started as vehicles reserved for golf courses, but today, they are an alternative mode of transportation for short-distance driving, especially in Florida’s many gated communities.
Experts from Traffic Injury Prevention report that more than 18,000 golf cart-related injuries occur in the United States annually. A recent study analyzed golf cart crashes in The Villages and the potential preventative measures that can be taken. The sources used for the study included The Villages Property Owners’ Association (POA), The Villages Sun Daily Newspaper, The Villages Public Safety Department (VPSD), Police Dispatch records, and the Sumter County Police database, and covered accidents occurring between 2011 and 2019.
During the study period, there were a total of 875 golf cart-related crashes. Of these 875, 136 crashes resulted in 65 hospitalizations and 9 tragic fatalities or disabilities, annually.
When reviewing these accidents, ejection occurred in 27 percent, hospitalization occurred in 55 percent, and death or disability occurred in 15 percent of the crashes. All the tragic deaths and disabilities occurred where golf carts were used on streets or road pathways.
The potential preventative measure recommended in the study was the use of 3-point seatbelts in golf carts. “These seatbelts would significantly reduce death and disability caused by these crashes,” reported Traffic Injury Prevention.
Unfortunately, Lee County has also experienced tragic golf cart accidents:
- In December 2020, an 86-year-old Fort Myers woman died when a motorist collided with her golf cart in North Fort Myers at the intersection of North Cleveland Avenue and Leesure Lane, near the Shell Factory.
- Another accident occurred in North Fort Myers when a New Jersey driver hit a couple in a golf cart while he was distracted by looking at his phone.
