Dangerous Wrecks on Alico Road Interchange
November 15, 2019 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareWINK News reported there was an accident on Monday, October 7, 2019, at the Alico Road interchange with I-75. This was not the first accident at this interchange. In fact, WINK says at least five additional major accidents have occurred at the interchange since December 2018.
Mitch Arimura told WINK he travels this route every day to and from work. He said, “I’ve almost crashed into people multiple times, just because people are turning in, and people decide to not really pay attention to much.”
Mr. Arimura recommends installing yield signs, that drivers slow down, and that an extra lane to the highway would help drivers not have to merge at fast speeds.
If construction is determined to be needed, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will need to do a study before any work can get started. A representative for FDOT, Zachary Burch, said the roadway is not to blame as many of the crashes were the driver’s fault. Mr. Burch told WINK that south Lee County is booming with more cars and an increase in crashes.
In the fall of 2003, a University of California accident analysis and prevention report titled “Freeway safety as a function of traffic flow” said:
A common aim of transportation management and control projects on urban freeways is to increase productivity by reducing congestion. Reducing congestion ostensibly leads to reductions in travel time, vehicle emissions, fuel usage, and improved travel time reliability. Tools have been recently implemented to measure the real-time performance of any instrumented segment of freeway in terms of throughput, travel time per vehicle, average speed, or total delay.
Reduced congestion and smoothed traffic flow are also likely to improve safety, as well as reduce psychological stress on drivers. Concentrating on the safety issue, our objective in this report is to demonstrate that researchers are beginning to understand the relationship between safety and improved traffic flow.
