DUI Impacts More Than the Driver

October 2, 2013 | Category: DUI Accidents | Share

90Drunk driving crashes are preventable. Every day in the United States 27 people die in alcohol-impaired crashes.  That is one every hour.  (Overview, Traffic Safety Facts, 2011 data)

More than one-third of those who have died in DUI accidents are not the DUI driver, according to NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) August 2013  Safety In Numbers.  In 2011, 9,878 people lost their lives who were not driving.  Below are the statistics:

      • 1,612 - passengers in vehicles where a driver had a BAC of 0.08+.
      • 1,049 - occupants of other vehicles.
      •    710 - bicyclists or pedestrians.
      •      91 - child passengers in vehicles where a driver had BCA of 0.08+.

When asked by NHTSA, about 17.2 million drivers admitted they had ridden with a driver in the past year they thought may have consumed too much alcohol to drive safely. 24% of young males were 3 times more likely to do this.

How to get keys away from intoxicated people?

Alcohol - Problems and Solutions has some helpful hints:

      • Be calm. Joke about it. Make light of it.
      • Make it clear that you're doing the drunk person a favor.
      • Locate their keys while they are preoccupied, and take them away. They will probably think they have lost them and will be forced to accept another mode of transportation.
      • If it is a close friend, try to use a soft, calm approach. Suggest to them privately that they have had too much to drink, and it would be better if someone else drove them home or if they took a cab or other transportation.
      • If it is a good friend, spouse, or loved one, tell them that if they insist on driving, you are not going with them. Tell them that you will ride with someone else, take public transportation, or walk.
      • If it is someone you don't know well, speak to their friends and have them make an attempt to persuade them to hand over the keys.
      • If possible, avoid embarrassing the person or being confrontational.

How to Report Drunk Drivers?

Alcohol - Problems and Solutions recommends that if you see anyone doing any of the following, report the car to the police or sheriff including description and location. The driver may be ill or intoxicated and should not be on the road.

      • weaving
      • driving with windows rolled down in cold weather
      • passing dangerously
      • straddling the centerline
      • making wide turns
      • driving slowly
      • tailgating
      • forgetting to turn on headlights
