Exercise Safe Driving Practices - Labor Day Weekend 2013

August 28, 2013 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

"Labor Day weekend marks the end of the summer season, a season of vacations and relaxation for many.  It also marks the time of high accident rates between 6 p.m. Friday, August 30 to 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 2.  As personal injury attorneys, we see the devastation and heart ache resulting from traffic accidents and urge everyone to drive safely and responsibly," said Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, P.A.

In a press release issued August 20, the National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that nearly 400 fatalities and 42,200 medically consulted injuries may occur from motor vehicle accidents this Labor Day weekend.

NSC President and CEO, Janet Froetscher said, "NSC issues fatality estimates for major holiday periods to draw attention to the need for drivers to exercise safe driving practices, especially when a significant number of drivers are expected to be on our nation's roads."

Vehicle AccidentWear Seatbelts - NSC reports that when seatbelts are used they are 45% effective in preventing fatalities among front-seat passenger car occupants and 50% effective for light-truck occupants. They estimate that 99 lives would be saved over Labor Day weekend if everyone wore seatbelts.

Use Appropriate Child Safety Seats - Children need to be in appropriate safety seats for their age and size. Drivers are responsible for occupants in their vehicle's being properly seated and buckled before moving.

No DUI - The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) estimates that 40% of the wrongful death accidents over Labor Day weekend will involve drunk driving. Designate a non-drinking driver or plan alternative transportation.

Distraction-free Zones - Establish and enforce distraction-free zones in vehicles, including cell phones, global positioning systems and other in-vehicle technology.

Drive Defensively - Exercise caution and drive defensively, especially during our rainy season.  Heed weather warnings and drive defensively.

Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. urges everyone to exercise caution when enjoying this Labor Day weekend.
