Eye Injuries Caused by Motor Vehicle Accidents

June 22, 2020 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

When one thinks about motor vehicle accidents, the first injury that comes to mind is probably broken bones. However, eye injuries may also occur. During Eye Safety Awareness Week June 28 – July 4, we are addressing eye injuries in vehicle accidents.

Eye Injuries Caused by Motor Vehicle Accidents - Spivey LawExperts have reported that the five most common eye injuries in vehicle accidents are contusions or abrasions, foreign bodies in the eyes, hemorrhages, and lacerations.

Contusions or Abrasions (also known as “black eye”)

These may occur when the eye socket is struck, which causes swelling and bruising.

Foreign Body

Small objects may fly around vehicle cabins in an accident. These include possible broken glass and pieces of metal. If a foreign object is trapped in the eye, there may be puncture wounds, eye irritation, and/or a scarring of the cornea.

Hemorrhages

Hemorrhages occur when a small blood vessel bursts in the eye which causes the eyes to have a bloodshot-eye appearance. This type of injury may be caused by a blow to the head or eye socket.

Lacerations

Stitches may be needed to help lacerations heal. If a laceration occurs to the eye, it may cause partial or total loss of vision.

Burns

Burns may also occur during a vehicle accident. When this happens, vision may be permanently damaged.

Lacerations and burns are usually the most serious eye injuries accident victims may sustain. They can prevent accident victims from going back to work and can limit a worker’s ability to earn a living.

Serious eye injuries as a result of a vehicle accident may be compensated. This compensation may include compensation for:

  • Permanent vision loss
  • Lost wages and future earning capacity
  • Medical expenses, past, present, and future
  • Pain and suffering

Eligibility for damages requires the establishment of:

  • Negligence of another party causing the accident.
  • Sustaining the eye injury as a result of the accident.
  • The eye injury caused damages to the victim’s life.
