Factors in Motorcycle Crash Risks

April 8, 2020 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | Share

The news media frequently reports on motorcycle accidents in Florida. Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable because of their exposure on our roadways. Data shows that motorcyclists are 28 times more likely to die when they are in an accident with other, larger vehicles, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.

Factors in Motorcycle Crash Risks - Spivey LawOn Wednesday, February 26th, a 30-year-old motorcyclist tragically died in a crash in Bradenton, Florida. Police reported that an SUV was turning into the parking lot of a restaurant, when the motorcycle crashed into it.

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) released a report titled “Factors that Increase and Decrease Motorcyclist Crash Risk” in 2016.

VTTI conducts research to save lives, save time, save money, and protect the environment; develops the techniques and technologies to solve transportation challenges from vehicular, driver, infrastructure, and environmental perspectives and specifically for motorcycle safety, uses the collection of real world driving/riding data and analysis/data mining to improve safety, with a focus on the user.

MSF’s mission is to make motorcycling safer and more enjoyable by ensuring access to lifelong quality education and training for current and prospective riders, and by advocating a safer riding environment.

The study that was conducted analyzed 30,844 trips for a total of 366,667 miles. Crash data collected included 30 crashes and 122 near-miss crashes. The events (ie crashes) per rider ranged from 0 to 13, and 55 riders experienced at least one event.

Here are the results of the study:

  • Discovered 12 factors that increase the risk of Crashes/Near-Crashes (CNCs)
  • Discovered 5 factors that decrease the risk of CNCs
  • Provided detailed guidance based on risk factors that can be incorporated into training programs
  • Produced a large, rich database of naturalistic riding information that will be used for years to uncover crash and near-crash mechanisms and support safety-related motorcycle research
  • Developed and tested a data reduction dictionary specifically for naturalistic motorcycle analysis that can be applied consistently across future studies
