Florida Highway Patrol Focuses On Aggressive Driving And Reducing Crashes

August 22, 2014 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), aggressive driving is when" individuals commit a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property." Driving faster than the posted speed limit, disobeying traffic control devices and recklessly making lane changes or passing other motorists might all be considered acts of aggressive driving. Additionally, your Fort Myers personal injury attorney knows that failing to slow down or stop in school crossing zones, tailgating and failing to pull over or stop for emergency vehicles can also be deemed acts of aggressive driving.

Personal injury attorneys like Randall Spivey realize that aggressive driving has been a serious issue for many years. Some people refer to such driving as "road rage," but regardless of what the act is called, it is a real threat to the safety of the lives of drivers and their passengers in Florida and throughout the country. That being the case, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has decided to move into the next phase of the safety campaign known as "Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks (TACT), which is geared toward educating drivers about the dangers of aggressive driving when dealing with big rigs on the roadway.

What You Need to Know

FHP's deputy director has stated that "FHP is committed to making [Florida] highways safer and one way to do that is by reducing the number of commercial vehicle-related crashes." The deputy director further noted that the accidents that occur between motor vehicles and trucks often involve driver error by both sides. The TACT campaign just ended on July 31st, but during the almost two weeks that the campaign ran, law enforcement officers were focused in on both automobile and truck operators who demonstrated various aggressive behaviors, like making unsafe lane changes, speeding and following too closely.

A Fort Myers personal injury attorney is well aware of the fact that some drivers simply do not know how to effectively share the road with trucks and other types of large vehicles. That said, the FHP has offered drivers tips with respect to driving and maneuvering around big rigs. One of the first things that motor vehicle drivers should keep in mind is that they must use caution when passing big trucks. Pass to the left of the truck and keep a consistent speed when doing so. Also, those driving automobiles should ensure to stay out of the truck's blind spot, which is often referred to as a "no zone." That "zone" is an area when a vehicle actually is not visible to the truck driver, and such zones can be on the front, side and rear of the truck.

Motor vehicle drivers should also exercise a bit of patience when confronted with large trucks on the roadway. Do not cut the truck off, and avoid making any sudden or unpredictable moves, even if the truck driver isn't driving as quickly as you'd like. Aggressive driving is a serious problem, and drivers are always encouraged to contact their local law enforcement if they experience or witness an aggressive driving incident.
