Ford Transmission Problems Causing Frustration and Accidents
August 19, 2019 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareThe Ford Motor Company has experienced transmission problems in 1.3 million vehicles. The vehicles covered are Explorer SUVs 2011-2017 and F-150 pickups 2013. Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus models have also experienced transmission problems.
The Detroit Free Press wrote an article in May 2019 about the Ford Fiesta and Focus models equipped with DPS6 transmission experiencing transmission problems. After publication, it heard from frustrated owners about their personal experiences driving these models:
"I literally got run off of the highway when the car shifted into drive and suddenly lost gear and was like it went into neutral. I did 35 mph for 11 miles to get home.” — J.K. of Cushing, Minnesota (2015 Focus)
“My last and fifth breakdown with my Focus was on the way to work. I was stranded on I-95 at 6:30 in the morning. It was then I decided to get another vehicle.” — J.M. of Nashville, North Carolina (2013 Focus)
NBC Nightly News reported on July 11, 2019, “Ford repeatedly continued to sell the Focus and Fiesta car models despite knowing they had defective transmissions and despite thousands of complaints, according to an exhaustive examination of documents by the Detroit Free Press. Although the Fiesta and Focus models are being discontinued, 1.5 million remain on the road.”
The Ford transmission problems become evident when vehicles randomly lose power or unexpectedly bolt into intersections. Investigators say that Ford knew about the Fiesta and Focus transmission problems but sold them anyway.
In an article for motor1.com, Christopher Smith said, “When an automaker recalls nearly 1.5 million vehicles, people generally notice. When the vehicle in question is the best-selling Ford F-150, it’s doubly so. And when the crux of the recall is an issue that could potentially cause a serious accident, you basically have a perfect storm of concern. This problem may have already caused accidents. In its recall statement, Ford says it’s aware of five cases where an accident occurred that could be related to this problem.”
