Get to Know Your Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)

March 4, 2013 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) is standard on all 2012 and later model cars and light trucks as required by the Federal government. Although not required, many automobile manufacturers have included ABS brakes as standard on their vehicles for many years.

Automated ABS, which works faster than a driver,  prevents wheels from locking up resulting in uncontrolled skidding and auto accidents and truck crashes.  It improves vehicle control in emergency situations and on dry and slippery surfaces and may decrease stopping distances for many drivers.  Stopping distances can be effected by many factors which include:

  • Type of brakes
  • Speed of vehicle
  • Road conditions
  • Vehicle conditions
  • Driver reaction times

Man Applying BrakesFlorida Accident Attorney, Randall Spivey, Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. says, "Motorists need to become familiar with their vehicle's braking system.  Owner's manuals have this information.  If the vehicle has ABS, training may be required.  These brakes don't need motorist pumping action familiar to many vehicle owners. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) has helpful information."
