GM SUVs Could Catch Fire
September 2, 2014 | Category: Unsafe Vehicles | Share"We, at Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A., are concerned about the public's safety and feel it is important, and our duty, to alert consumers of the potential danger related to 7.6 million General Motors' SUVs model years 2006 and 2007 as these vehicles may 'catch fire when left unattended'," said Attorney Randall Spivey.
Associated Press Reporter, Tom Krisher reported in the Naples Daily News (August 9, 2014) that GM recalled these vehicles on June 30, 2014, and that federal safety regulators (National Highway Traffic Administration - NHTSA) posted documents this week which included warnings of the severity of the problem. The models affected are the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 97-X, and there are approximately 189 thousand of these vehicles in the North America.
According to the NHTSA, there is a possibility that fluid may contact the master power window switch module in the driver's door. This fluid may corrode the part. Over time, this could cause a short circuit, which would leave the buttons inoperable and potentially lead to a fire.
GM is currently telling customers to park the SUVs outdoors until they may be repaired. They have further ordered its dealers to stop selling the SUVs as used cars until they can be fixed. NBC News reports that this fix will take some time as parts will not be ready until October at the earliest.
The Chicago Tribune reports that as of June 30th with six months still to go, automobile makers have already recalled more vehicles than in any other year.37.5 million cars have been recalled in 2014, topping 30.8 million in 2004.
The NHTSA provides information to the public about recalls. One method is the SaferCar mobile app both for Android and Apple devices. Vehicle owners register their vehicles with NHTSA, and when there is a safety issue with their vehicles, they will be notified by NHTSA. This same app may be used to notify them of any safety issues drivers may have with their vehicles. Also, vehicle owners may sign up to receive email alerts on recalls.
