According to Florida statistics, nearly 25 million residents and tourists participate in bicycling annually in the state. Not only is bicycling a form of transportation, but bicycling is a fun way to exercise and create memories by spending time together. Like any physical activity it carries some risk. Florida has consistently ranked as one of the most lethal states for bicycle accidents in the nation. The risks of being injured while bicycling can be reduced by everyone’s being more safety-conscious.
On Alerttodayflorida.com, bicyclists and motorists can access some tools under Resources to help them both stay safe. These tools include:
BikeSafe Videos:
- The Dangers of Riding Against Traffic
- Navigating Intersections
- Claiming the Lane, and
- Riding Safely on Sidewalks
Bikeability Checklist: The FDOT Bikeability Checklist is a “report card” for our state’s communities. Bicyclists can rate their biking experience in the following categories after which there is information from FDOT on what to do to make changes:
- Safety of the riding place
- Surface conditions
- Intersection safety
- Drivers behavior
- Pro-active ways bicyclist made ride safer, and
- Ease of bicycling
Self-Assessment Quiz: The Alerttodayflorida.com website also gives bicyclists and motorists alike the opportunity to take a self-assessment quiz. This quiz has questions which cover situations both on the road and off the road, skills and techniques, some common mistakes and laws relevant to bicyclists and motorists.
FloridaBicycle.org says that, “Even though Florida is making progress in making the state more bike-friendly through the passage of laws, making bike lanes wider, and planning a more bike-friendly infrastructure, motorists and bicyclists need to do their part in ensuring that the roads are safe for everyone.”
