The Magic of Halloween - Trick or Treat Safety
October 27, 2021 | Category: Child Injuries, Personal Injury | ShareGhosts, ghouls, vampires, superheroes, and zombies are all coming. Millions of children in the U.S. participate in Halloween festivities by going door-to-door collecting candy on Halloween. This heightens pedestrian traffic and increases the number of tragic pedestrian injuries and fatalities. SafeKids Worldwide says, “Children are twice as likely to be hit by a car and tragically killed on Halloween than on any other day.”
The American Automobile Association (AAA) has the following tips for adults to keep trick-or-treaters safe on the streets this Halloween:
- If possible, avoid cutting through residential areas where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present.
- Motorists should obey all traffic signs and signals. The risk of killing a pedestrian increases with just small increases in speed.
- Watch for children walking on roadways, medians, and curbs. In dark costumes, they'll be harder to see at night.
- If you just travel through residential areas, scan far ahead, watch for children, and cautiously monitor their actions.
- Turn on your headlights to make yourself more visible – even in the daylight.
