Has Your Vehicle Been Repaired Following A Recall?
October 11, 2013 | Category: Unsafe Vehicles | Share
Millions of vehicles are recalled every year. Almost 18 million vehicles were recalled in 2012, and 15.5 million in 2011. Since 1966 more than 390 million cars, trucks, buses, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, and mopeds were recalled to correct safety defects. Manufacturers are required to notify owners when there is a recall. Sometimes, even with notification, the needed repairs are not addressed or completed.
In a press release issued August 14, 2013, NHTSA announced its plans to require auto makers and motorcycle manufacturers to provide consumers with a free on-line tool that will enable them to search recall information by VIN number. Starting in 2014 the NHTSA announced it will be providing a new, free search of motor vehicle VIN (vehicle identification numbers) for all automobiles, motorcycles and light trucks, so they may be searched for uncompleted recalls. This important information will be available to such interested parties as owners, renters, leasers, potential owners, used vehicle dealers and more.
The information will only be available on the NHSTA website Safercar.gov . Currently, safety recalls can only be searched by make, model number, and year, and the information provided is not specific to a single vehicle. The new VIN number search will also have a feature allowing people to receive email alerts when a specific vehicle has an unresolved recall or is subject to a new recall.
Randall Spivey, Personal Injury Attorney practicing in Southwest Florida including Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, and Port Charlotte says, "This is a welcome advancement as it will help make people learn, in the easiest possible way, about vehicle recalls. The benefit will be fewer auto accidents, truck accidents, motorcycle accidents and other vehicle accidents because there will be fewer defective vehicles on the road. Fewer accidents will save lives and reduce serious life-altering crashes."
