Help for Traumatic Brain Injury Victims
January 5, 2016 | Category: Brain Injuries | ShareTraumatic brain injury is one of the most devastating injuries a victim can endure. Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is common among victims injured in motor vehicle collisions or injured as a result of a fall. TBI causes symptoms ranging from mood changes and impaired memory to seizures and ringing in the ears, and treating the condition and its symptoms is often very difficult. Now, however, Breakthroughs describes a new drug that may show some promise in the treatment of TBI.
Drug therapies are always being developed to help patients suffering from the lasting effects of a blow to the brain. Because of the need for victims to get the latest medical care in order to improve their health status, it is important for those who have been harmed to consult with Randall Spivey and his team of Ft. Could New Drug Therapy Help Individuals With TBI?
According to Breakthroughs, doctors throughout the United States, including those at the National Institutes of Health, are experimenting with a medication called Tranexamic Acid, or TXA for short. TXA can help to stabilize blood clots which may be sustained by an injury victim. By stabilizing blood clots, bleeding in the brain can be stopped.
A professor at UT Southwestern is spearheading an upcoming study that involves paramedics working in the field administering TXA to brain injury patients as soon as possible after an injury happens. Four emergency medical services have agreed to participate in the study, as have seven local trauma centers where the study is taking place. It is expected that the process of administering TXA, evaluating the outcomes, and determining the impact of the drug could take a year to complete successfully.
TXA has been tested before, with some studies showing that administering the drug to people with acute trauma is effective. However, many of the studies conducted have not been large enough for an effective conclusion to be reached about whether the drug can actually live up to its promise and bring relief to TBI sufferers.
There have not been any new medications to help patients suffering from brain trauma for more than 30 years, despite the fact people are becoming more aware of the risks of TBI and emergency department visits for people with suspected TBI have grown by 70 percent over the past decade. Much is still not understood about the brain and the approaches to take to treat and prevent lasting injury. Hopefully, this drug will prove to be an advancement in TBI treatment and hopefully more medications and effective treatment protocols will be developed over time to provide relief to those who have injured the brain.
