It's Holiday Time; It's National Impaired Driving Prevention Month December 2012
December 4, 2012 | Category: Automobile Accidents | SharePresident Barack Obama "urges all Americans to make responsible decisions and take appropriate measures to prevent impaired driving" in his Presidential Proclamation marking December 2012 National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on average someone in the United States is killed by a drunk driver every 40 minutes.
The National Highway Safety Management Association reported that in 2010 (latest available figures) nearly one-third of all traffic-related deaths in the United States were the result of alcohol-impaired driving crashes. On average, in December 2010, alone 25 people were killed in drunk driving crashes per day. The holiday season brings the danger of combining the throttle and the bottle.
Attorney Randall Spivey, Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. would like to take this time to remind drivers to have a good time by planning ahead for a designated driver. "If there is not a designated driver, call a taxi. Protect drinking friends by taking away their keys. If hosting a holiday party be a friend first then a host, serve food, offer non-alcoholic alternatives and be sure everyone leaving the party has a safe way home. MADD (Mothers Against Drug Driving) has a coupon which can be given to friends and family volunteering to be the "designated driver" for the night. Here's a link to download the Give the Gift of a Designated Driver coupon."
Drunk driving should never be an option. In a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Association, it was found that drunk drivers often don't buckle their seatbelts, speed and drive aggressively.
