Keep Teens Safe - Enroll Them in The Teen Driver Challenge This Summer
June 4, 2014 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareWith the school year either winding down or over for most of our teen drivers, why not have your teen take the Florida Sheriffs Association Teen Driver Challenge (TDC). The benefits are very worthwhile as 16-19 year olds are three times more likely to be in fatal crashes per mile than drivers 20 and older.
This no-cost program is for 15-19 year-olds and is conducted in 35 counties in Florida including Collier and Lee Counties. (There is a $25 refundable deposit required at registration to reserve a seat. Registrations are required and fill up quickly.)
The course is 12 hours and is completed over two days. It involves 4 hours of classroom work and 8 hours hands-on instruction on a driving course. The teacher/student ratio is 1-to-5. All participants must be licensed and have a vehicle they regularly drive available for the range portion. If the driver is driving with a learner's permit, he/she must be accompanied by a licensed driver when doing the range portion of the program. Proof of insurance, along with the signing of a release of liability form are also required.
The objectives of the TDC are:
- To reduce the number of crashes for drivers who take this class (age group of 15 to 19 year-olds).
- To reduce the number of fatal crashes.
- To reduce the number of DUI arrests and aggressive driving citations for drivers who take this class.
Instructors inspect, in the student's presence, all student vehicles for safety and instructional purposes. Vehicles must pass inspection to be allowed on the course. During the inspection, students can learn about vehicle maintenance.
The hands-on program includes exercises such as the Figure "8", threshold braking, forward serpentine cornering, backing, and evasive driving.
The hours spent participating in the TDC can be used toward fulfilling the requirements set forth in Florida's Graduated Driver's License program. At the completion of the program students will be presented with Certificates of Completion that can be given to their auto insurance companies for a possible premium reduction.
