Left-turn Lights Get a Different Look in Collier and Lee Counties

July 3, 2013 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

Do you know what a flashing yellow arrow means?

Left Turn Flashing Yellow Arrow WarningAccording to The News Press June 25, 2013, Lee county has three flashing yellow-arrow lights; one at the intersection of Lee Blvd. and Alvin Avenue in Lehigh Acres, one at the intersection of Gunnery Road North and 12th Street West in Lehigh Acres and one at New Brittany Blvd./Queen Elizabeth Way and College Parkway in south Fort Myers. Collier county just installed two such lights in North Naples at the intersections of Livingston Road and Veterans Memorial Blvd. and Livingston Road and Ravina Way/Learning Lane.

Authorities say that the flashing yellow arrow means motorists may cautiously enter an intersection, but they must yield to on-coming traffic and pedestrians before making a left turn to avoid possible vehicle accidents or pedestrian accidents.

The National Cooperative Highway Research Program did a national traffic study  in 2003 and found that flashing yellow lights were safer than green lights and flashing red lights.  According to their analysis of 50 intersections with left-turn flashing yellow arrows, they found safety had improved and there were fewer vehicle and pedestrian accidents.  The report also said that most drivers understood the flashing yellow arrows, or if they didn't, proceeded with caution.

Even though the national traffic study was positive, Las Vegas, Nevada police are investigating whether a flashing yellow arrow was a contributing factor in the death of a 3-year-old girl in January, 2013.
