MADD Celebrates the Moving Forward Act
August 7, 2020 | Category: DUI Accidents | ShareIn a press release on July 1, 2020, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) “praised the leadership of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio and Highways and Transit Subcommittee Chairwoman Eleanor Holmes Norton along with House Energy & Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky, and Representative Debbie Dingell for including the HALT Act in the Moving Forward Act. This legislation has passed the U.S. House of Representatives and would require the Department of Transportation to issue a rulemaking in the near future to require cars to passively detect drunk drivers and to take appropriate action.”
According to MADD, the Moving Forward Act (H.R.4354) takes a technology-neutral approach, giving vehicle manufacturers reasonable time to include future drunk-driving technologies in all vehicles.
H.R.4354 was introduced in the House of Representatives on September 17, 2019. The bill honors the Abbas Family Legacy to Terminate Drunk Driving Act (HALT Drunk Driving Act). (The Abbas family of five was killed by a drunk driver in 2019.)
H.R.4342 directs the Department of Transportation to prescribe a motor vehicle safety standard that requires a motor vehicle to be equipped with an advanced alcohol detection device that (1) determines the blood alcohol concentration of the operator of the vehicle, and (2) prevents the operation of the vehicle if the operator is legally intoxicated.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration must implement a program to equip the advanced alcohol detection devices on not less than 1,500 government-owned fleet vehicles by the end of FY2022.
MADD says that this legislation provides critical funding and other tools needed to combat drunk driving on our roads. Safety is a top priority by strengthening traffic safety requirements for states.
