May Is Motorcycle Awareness Month

May 19, 2020 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | Share

Florida’s beautiful weather and vistas make it a popular place for motorcycle enthusiasts to ride. However, Florida continually ranks in the top three states in the nation for motorcycle-related fatalities.

May Is Motorcycle Awareness Month - Spivey LawThe American Motorcyclist Association is issuing a special appeal to motorists to be especially aware of motorcycles during Motorcycle Awareness Month, as May marks the seasonal return of motorcyclists to the roadways in much of the country.

Motorcyclists comprise approximately 7 percent of all the licensed motorists and drivers in Florida, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, motorcyclists accounted for almost one in five of all the motor vehicle fatalities.

On Thursday, May 7, a 39-year-old father was tragically killed while riding his motorcycle home from work in Miami. The accident happened at 7:00 a.m. on SW 17th Avenue. Good Samaritans were performing CPR on the motorcyclist, but to no avail. He later tragically died. A witness to the accident who was driving to work said, “The motorcyclist was cut off and struck by the driver who sped off.”

The driver who hit the motorcycle was later found, and authorities said he may face charges, including leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality.

“In observance of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. would like to share three major motorcycle safety campaigns,” said Fort Myers Motorcycle Accident Attorney Randall Spivey.

  • Share The Road focuses on promoting motorcyclist awareness and safety to both motorcycle riders and motor vehicle drivers, including motorist’s awareness of motorcycles.
