The City of Cape Coral Declares May Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month
May 5, 2022 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | ShareThe City of Cape Coral is reminding drivers that May is “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month”.
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) first launched this campaign in the early 1980s, and it has been adopted by many motorcycle organizations and government entities. AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman said, “For almost 40 years, the AMA has promoted motorcycle awareness in May because, as the weather warms in large parts of the country, riders take to the road in increasing numbers to enjoy the thrill of riding, the practicality of commuting, and the beauty of our natural surroundings. We urge other road users to be alert to the presence of motorcycles on city, urban and rural streets, and highways.”
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), approximately 600 motorcyclists tragically die on Florida roads every year, and the Florida Department of Transportation reports that our state continually ranks among the top three states in the nation for motorcycle-related fatalities.
Experts agree that the biggest factor that leads to motorcycle crashes with other vehicles is that drivers do not see motorcyclists when they are passing or turning. Regrettably, today’s motorist is much more distracted.
The AMA urges motorists to be especially aware of conditions around them, maintain a safe distance when following motorcycles, check their mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes, and pay particular attention when making left turns across traffic.
Every time motorcyclists ride their bikes, they have a higher-than-average chance of getting into an accident with a car or a truck. Most of these crashes are preventable and devastating. Motorcyclists are at great risk for head and neck injuries, including brain bruising, and broken or fractured necks.
