Memorial Day Weekend - Click It Or Ticket Campaign

May 22, 2013 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

"Memorial Day Weekend is a time for remembrance of those who gave their lives for our country so we can be free.  In the past it has also been the weekend with many vehicle accidents.  When vehicle accidents occur, it has been proven that seat belts save lives.  Still, there are those who don't use them," says Southwest Florida Personal Injury Attorney, Randall Spivey, Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.

Memorial Day Weekend - May 20 - June 2, 2013 the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) launches its "Click It or Ticket" campaign.  The purpose of the campaign is to increase the national seat belt usage rate.

Click It Or Ticket

One in five Americans do not regularly use seat belts, the most effective safety feature ever invented, and men between 18 and 34 are less likely to wear seat belts than any other gender or age group, according to NHTSA.

Florida law requires front drivers and front seat passengers to wear seat belts in any car manufactured since 1968.  The law also states that all passengers under 18 must wear a seat belt or be otherwise restrained by a child car seat.  If all the passengers do not meet these standards, it is against the law to operate the vehicle. Details of the law can be found in the Florida drivers manual. Below is a summary of the Florida mandatory seat belt laws.

Summary of Mandatory Seat Belt Laws

    • Seat belt laws apply to all cars, pickup trucks, and vans operated on Florida roads.
    • All passengers in the front seat must wear a seat belt.
    • All passengers under 18 must wear a seat belt

Florida Child Restraint Requirements

    • Children 3 and younger must be secured in a federally approved child-restraint seat.
    • Children 4 through 5 must be secured by either a federally approved child restraint seat or safety belt.
    • The Driver is responsible for buckling up the child.
