Millions of Keurig MINI Plus Brewers Recalled: What You Need to Know

April 2, 2015 | Category: Defective Products | Share

In December 2014, Keurig Green Mountain Inc. (Keurig) announced it was recalling over 7 million MINI Plus brewers made between December of 2009 and July 2014. The affected brewers have the model number “K10” and serial numbers that start with 31. Apparently, the company had received hundreds of reports stating that hot liquid was escaping from the brewer during use, which led to some consumers suffering burn-related injuries.

Randall Spivey and his team of Ft. Myers personal injury attorneys have assisted many individuals and their families after an injury has been sustained due to a defective product. Consumers should be aware that, under Florida law, distributors and manufacturers of unsafe products can be held legally responsible for injuries. That said, anyone who has been hurt by a defective Keurig or any other product is encouraged to speak to one of our personal injury attorneys as soon as possible.

What You Need to Know About the Recall

More specifically, 6.6 million brewers are being recalled in the U.S., while about 564,000 are being recalled in Canada. The MINI Plus brewers were sold both online and through major retailers, to include Target, Kohl’s, Kmart and Walmart. The recalled units can be identified by looking at the white sticker on the bottom of the unit and noting the identification number. Again, the affected brewers have serial numbers that begin with 31 and the entire range of affected serial numbers can be viewed online at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website.

Based on reports the company received about the brewers, the company determined that the escape of hot water during usage was more likely to take place when the unit was used to brew two or more cups of beverage in quick succession. That being the case, the company advised consumers not to brew more than two cups back to back until the brewer has been repaired. Users are also encouraged to stay at least an arm’s length away from the unit during the brewing process.

Keurig is offering consumers free repair kits. To obtain your kit, contact the company at (844) 255-7886 or email keurig@inmar.com.

Your Rights Under the Law

While it is true Keurig is providing consumers with a free remedy to repair the affected brewers, it is important for harmed individuals to understand they still have additional rights under the law.  Many of the reported brewer-related injuries included burns that were deemed to be “minor.”

Still, if you were burned or injured in some other way by a faulty unit, the company could be held responsible for any medical costs incurred for the burns and/or other injuries sustained, as well as any time you may have had to take off work due to your injuries.
