What Are the Most Common Pedestrian Injuries?
March 19, 2021 | Category: Pedestrian Accidents | ShareThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports every year over 60,000 pedestrians are injured and 4,000 are tragically killed in the United States.
“Pedestrians are at risk of being struck by a vehicle every time they walk in Southwest Florida,” says Fort Myers Pedestrian Accident Attorney Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.
The National Institute of Health (NIH) says the most vulnerable pedestrians are children, the elderly, and those of lower socioeconomic status.
There are many variables in pedestrian accidents. The injuries pedestrians sustain depend on the size and design of the vehicle, the vehicle’s speed, the pedestrian’s height, weight, and center of gravity, and the angle of impact between the vehicle and the pedestrian.
The most common Florida pedestrian injuries are to the lower extremities, head, face, neck and upper extremities, according to the NIH.
Lower Extremities: Half of all pedestrian injuries involve the lower extremities because the first impact happens when the pedestrian’s lower leg comes in contact with the vehicle’s front bumper. Lower extremities can sustain fractures, lacerations, muscle damage, broken bones, and ligament damage. These injuries may require surgery, followed by ongoing physical therapy and other treatments.
Head, Face & Neck: When a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle, the second impact is often a strike to the vehicle's hood or windshield. Approximately 40 percent of pedestrian injuries are those to the head, face, and neck that can result in skull fractures, lacerations, concussions, neck injuries, vertebrae damage, shoulder injuries, and jaw fractures. These injuries can be life-threatening or life-altering.
Upper Extremities: Upper extremities can be injured if a pedestrian hits a vehicle's hood or is thrown over a vehicle. These accidents can cause muscle injuries or broken bones in the hands, wrists, and/or arms. If the pedestrian suffers chest or abdomen injuries, internal organs may be compromised.
