Motorcycle Safety Awareness

August 24, 2020 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | Share

Florida’s environment with its many scenic vistas, ecology, and coastline offers motorcyclists a wonderful place to ride. This is the reason motorcycling is so popular in our state. Florida has more registered motorcycles than almost all other states in the United States. Statista.com reported 587,499 Florida motorcycle registrations in 2018, second only to California with 822,844. (Note: The statistics show the number of publicly owned, private, and commercial motorcycles which are registered.)

By their nature, motorcycles are smaller and lighter compared to four-wheeled vehicles. If another vehicle crashes into a motorcycle, the chance of the motorcyclist being injured or killed increases.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) compiled data on vehicles involved in fatal accidents between 2008 and 2017.

Reviewing the NHTSA data for motorcycles, you can see that, although motorcycles are involved in fewer crashes than other vehicles, the rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled was 25.99 in 2008 and 26.43 in 2017.  If one compares the crashes by rate per 100,000 registered vehicles in 2008, it was 69.77, and in 2017, it was 61.11. These statistics are higher than any other vehicle that were compared. Authorities report that a majority of these accidents were caused by other vehicles, not motorcycles.

“If a motorcyclist is injured or killed in an accident by a negligent driver, the victim, and/or the victim’s family, may be entitled to compensation. This compensation may include reimbursement for past, present and future medical expenses, past and future loss of wages, past and future pain and suffering, and past and future loss of the enjoyment of life.  Contact our experienced motorcycle accident team after seeking medical attention.
