Motorists, Be Aware of Motorcycles
December 26, 2019 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | ShareVehicle-carrying trucks have already started coming in anticipation of Florida’s busy season. With an increase in the number of drivers on our roads and highways, more motorcyclists will be enjoying rides.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 13 out of every 100,000 cars get involved in a fatal accident, versus 72 out of every 100,000 motorcycles. Motorcycle accident deaths are 30 percent more common.
When motorcycles are involved in accidents, the outcomes are more serious because motorcyclists are less protected, have less braking power, and there is no physical barrier between the motorcyclist and the pavement.
The Miami Patch reported in March 2019 on the difference between motorcycle and car accidents and the injuries motorcyclists suffer:
Motorcycle and car accidents could not be more different from one another. Motorcycle riders are exposed to far more different hazards than car drivers. In addition to negligent vehicle driving, some common causes of motorcycle accidents include:
- Uneven surfaces
- Broken pavement
- Potholes
- Railroad tracks
- Gravel in the roadway
- Slick surfaces
The injuries a motorcyclist is exposed to also differ from those of a car driver. When a motorcyclist is involved in an accident, several injuries can be sustained:
- Cuts
- Facial disfiguration
- Fractured bones, particularly collar bones and pelvises
- Burns
- Tissue damage
- Road rash
