Neck and Back Injuries Resulting from Vehicle Accidents
May 30, 2014 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareAccording to the Florida DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles), an average of 770 motor vehicle crashes occur daily in Florida. Each year, 14,000 people are hospitalized for non-fatal injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents, and the neck, back and spine are most commonly affected.
Neck Injuries
Because the neck is so flexible and supports the head, it is extremely vulnerable to injury. The most common injuries involve the soft tissues: the muscles and ligaments. Cervical myofascial injury occurs when the head is suddenly or violently thrust forward and then backward. The neck hyper extends, the joints in the neck get jammed, and the delicate tendons and muscles can be damaged even at speeds as low as 15 mph. (Source: healthline.com)
Back Injuries
Back injuries involve vertebral fracture or herniated disk. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, fractures of the upper spine are thoracic fractures, while fractures of the lower spine are lumbar fractures. A herniated disc involves damage to the tissues that serve as cushions between the vertebrae of the spine.
Spinal Cord Injuries
In Florida, an average of 807 spinal cord injury-related hospitalizations occur each year. These injuries result from damage to the vertebrae, ligaments or disks of the spinal column or to the spinal cord itself. Motor vehicle accidents cause 42% of spinal cord injuries. 24% by acts of violence, 22% from slip and fall accidents, 8% from sports and 2% other causes according to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association.
Symptoms of Neck, Back or Spinal cord injury include:
- Difficulty swallowing
- Dizziness
- Recurring headaches
- Blurred vision
- Ringing in the ears
- Pain in the neck radiating down the arms and legs
- Moderate to severe back pain that is made worse by movement
