New Technology to Prevent Wrong-Way Crashes Being Tested

April 20, 2020 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

On February 9, 2020, a wrong-way 2020 Ford Mustang driver caused a six-car crash on I-75 before 3:00 a.m. A 25-year-old woman was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when five other cars were traveling northbound. The Mustang collided head-on with one of them, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The injured were taken to Lee Health.

The Florida Department New Technology to Prevent Wrong-Way Crashes Being Tested - Spivey Lawof Transportation (FDOT) is testing new technology to lower the number of wrong-way accidents. The testing started in Charlotte County in February.

It works when someone drives the wrong way up I-75. The driver’s radar is tripped, which causes a thermal camera to turn on.

"At that point, it will trigger some signs to let the driver know you're going the wrong way," said FDOT spokesperson Zac Burch.

The FDOT traffic management center is notified and then calls FHP to alert other drivers by changing the message on the overhead digital signs.

“This one would say wrong-way driver ahead, so it gives drivers going the correct way on the interstate a warning there may be a wrong-way driver ahead,” said Burch.

Technology testing was done at off of exit 164 on I-75 in Charlotte County because it has a common design for on and off-ramps in Florida. The technology costs about $200,000.

FDOT says that if it is successful, they could roll it out to all other interchanges, starting with known problem areas.

Fort Myers Car Accident Attorney Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. says, “The force exerted by two or more speeding vehicles that collide into one another front-first causes serious or fatal injuries. The collision does not allow enough time for drivers and passengers to react and shield themselves. Hopefully, technology testing will lead to fewer injuries.”
