NHTSA Motorcycle Safety 5-Year Plan
January 3, 2020 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | ShareIn May 2019, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued its five-year motorcycle safety plan.
NHTSA said, “Motorcycles are an important element of our transportation system, contributing to both mobility and recreation for millions of riders in the United States. Motorcyclists continue to be overrepresented in traffic-related fatalities, accounting for 14 percent of all traffic-related fatalities, while representing only 3 percent of the entire registered motor vehicle fleet. With the number of registered motorcycles at an all-time high, it is especially critical that NHTSA remain focused on a comprehensive set of interventions to improve rider safety, while exploring new strategies with the goal of achieving zero fatalities. This NHTSA Motorcycle Safety Plan provides a comprehensive framework for addressing opportunities to improve motorcycle safety in the coming years. Additionally, the plan informs stakeholders of agency interests and directions. NHTSA appreciates the work of a broad range of government and non-government safety professionals toward preventing motorcycle crashes and injuries. With the help of states, local jurisdictions, national organizations, rider groups, manufacturers, insurers, riders, and drivers, we can continue to make progress in making motorcycling safer.”
Finder.com, situated in New York City, compared motorcycle statistics from the NHTSA and the Insurance Information Institute (III) motorcycle crash report to determine why motorcycle riders face higher accident and injury risks.
NHTSA reported that motorcycles made up 14 percent of all traffic deaths in 2017. III also found that these fatalities have continued to rise over the past few years. After having dropped in 2009 to 4,469, the number crept up to 5,286 in 2016.
NHTSA says the common scenarios for motorcycle accidents are
- Head-on collisions. Frontal collisions factor into more than 75 percent of all motorcycle crashes.
- Left turns. The road can turn into a danger zone when a car makes a left-hand turn. In 42 percent of all fatal car accidents, the other vehicle was turning left while the biker was either heading straight, passing or overtaking.
- Running into objects. Around a quarter of motorcycle, fatalities happen because the bike crashed after trying to avoid something like a car or animal on the road.
- Exceeding the speed limit. Some 32 percent of motorcycle accidents that resulted in death involved speeding.
