Night Blindness May Be Worse Than Ever

Night Blindness While Driving

The glare from headlights is more troublesome than ever before.  According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), because of technology, automotive design and an aging population, vehicle lights at night are now brighter.

Vehicles may now have:

  • Extra lights including fog lamps to improve a driver's ability to see in the fog.
  • High tech lights like HID (high intensity discharge) lights which emit twice the light of halogen headlights.
  • Higher lights such as those on SUVs and light trucks which ride higher than cars.  (Federal safety standards are that no headlights can exceed 54 inches, SUVs typically measure about 33 inches - higher than passenger car headlights by almost 9 inches.)
  • Miss-aimed headlights which could be off by just one degree.  AAA reports that vehicles more than five years old are twice as likely to have miss-aimed headlights.

An aging population brings aging eyesight.  This may also result in "night blindness".

AAA recommends before hitting the road, drivers take some precautions such as:

  • Cleaning headlights
  • Keeping all glass clear
  • Aiming headlights correctly
  • Adjusting both outside mirrors
  • Checking vision regularly

Behind-the-wheel tips:

  • Avert your eyes.
  • Use mirrors' night setting.
  • Use lights courteously.
  • Take frequent breaks.
