Red-Light Running - A Recipe for Disaster - Spivey Law

Verra Mobility, a provider of technology solutions, such as red-light cameras, to make mobility safer and easier, released videos of the worst red-light runners in 2020 on January 1, 2021. Verra Mobility's video footage shows collisions captured by red-light safety cameras in communities across the country. Even with fewer people on the road because of the COVID-19 pandemic, these crashes continue to be a threat.  The videos included footage from red-light safety camera programs in Florida, as well as Arizona, Maryland, Alabama, North Carolina, and Louisiana. Florida topped Verra Mobility’s list of red-light runners in 2020.

Garrett Miller, Verra Mobility’s Executive Vice President of Government Solutions, said, “These shocking crashes – captured in a year when traffic was actually down due to the pandemic – serve as a chilling reminder of the dangers that red-light runners present to our neighbors, friends, and families. In most cases, these tragedies can be attributed to distracted driving and reckless behavior, making these collisions, not accidents.”

Running a red light is a moving violation in Florida. Most law enforcement officers and judges may consider entering an intersection when the light is yellow but turns red as a vehicle passes underneath the light, as running a red light.

An estimated 165,000 motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians are injured every year by red-light runners. The U.S. Department of Transportation wants drivers to “Do Your Part to Stop Red-Light Running Tragedies by:

  • Deciding now that you will always be prepared to stop on red as a driver, cyclist, or pedestrian.
  • Obeying speed limits so you have time and space to stop before entering the intersection."

Several types of crashes can occur when a driver runs a red light, one of which is a T-bone crash. T-bone crashes generally happen when one motorist speeds through an intersection as a traffic signal changes and another vehicle is passing through.

There are many injuries victims may suffer in red-light running accidents. These injuries include broken bones, back injuries, soft tissue injuries, and brain, head, and neck injuries.
