Robotic Trucks Already on Florida Highways

May 29, 2019 | Category: Truck Accidents | Share

Approximately 5,000 people in passenger vehicles die every year in accidents involving semi-trucks, and about 700 people in semi-trucks die each year. Many feel that self-driving trucks could be an answer to decreasing the number of these fatalities.

Robotic Trucks Already on Florida Highways - Spivey LawLTX Transportation Solutions reports that self-driving trucks are quickly becoming a reality. Companies like Google, Uber and Tesla are investing in the development of self-driving trucks with a goal of automating shipping to the extent that a driverless truck can pick up and deliver a shipment without issues.

Fox13 News reported in February 2019 that drivers sharing the roads with trucks may not realize that many of the trucks are already self-driving, with a human along for the ride for safety purposes. Starsky Robotics of California is one of the companies which has been testing self-driving trucks on our highways.

Stefan Seltz-Axmacher, CEO and founder of Starsky Robotics, said about a recent test, “We're using the cameras around the truck to get a sense of where the other vehicles are. The radar gives us an accurate position of them. There was an overseer in an office monitoring our trip, but he was more than 100 miles away in Jacksonville, connected remotely.  The remote driver took care of the start and end of the test; however, the bulk of it was autonomous. The way we've designed our system is so that if any part of the system fails, the truck can still be safe. We have redundancies, but more importantly than that, we have in-depth tests that are constantly happening in the background. As soon as we see a failure, the system would automatically start pulling the vehicle over to the side of the road.”

Driverless truck developers have been quietly carrying out their experiments on highways across the Sunbelt. According to Department of Transportation (DOT) data, automated trucks racked up well over 200,000 miles on public roads in 2017.
