'Safety is No Accident' - Is Your Vehicle Safe?
April 18, 2014 | Category: Unsafe Vehicles | ShareWhether you are a new or experienced driver, there are several things that you can do to make your vehicle safer for driving. It all starts with making sure that your vehicle is in peak condition.
Keep up with your vehicle's maintenance schedule - Check your vehicle's fluids; oil, transmission, coolant/antifreeze, power steering and brake. Other things to check include your exhaust system, lights and hazards.
Inspect your belts and hoses - Look for signs of cracking or wear such as bulging, brittleness. Also check for leaks around the hose clamps. If necessary, have them replaced.
Check your windshield wipers and fluid - If they look bad or are not clearing water well from your windshield, replace them. Check the fluid reservoir monthly and fill it with a solution designed to remove insects or other debris.
Check your tire's tread - The easiest way to do this is to use the "quarter test." Grab a quarter between your first finger and thumb at the opposite end of Washington's head. Then, insert the quarter into a groove on the tread in each tire. If you can see the top of Washington's head, then it is time to buy new tires.
Do a visual inspection and check the tire pressure regularly - You might notice a nail head before it causes a flat. You should also check your tire pressure at least once per month to make sure that tires are inflated to the recommended level. The recommended level can typically be found on the inside of the vehicle's doors.
Be prepared for emergencies - Stock an emergency vehicle kit, with basic items such as:
- a first aid kit
- flashlight with extra batteries
- mobile phone charger
- jumper cables
- road flares
- water and snacks
- blanket
Keep a small tool kit equipped with basic tools. Make sure you have a tire jack and tire sealant in case of flats.
Plan ahead and check the weather forecast - Consider the safest route, and give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going.
