Safety Tips for Drivers in School Zones
September 3, 2021 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareAccording to Safe Kids Worldwide, 4 high school students and 1 in 6 middle school students are distracted in school zones every day.
On August 9, 2021, the American Automobile Association (AAA) began its statewide school zone safety campaign in Florida. AAA distributed more than 1,200 roadside signs that urge Florida drivers to be careful. AAA’s School’s Open - Drive Carefully campaign wants drivers to slow down, eliminate distractions, and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also wants school children to be safe. It recommends when driving through an area marked as a school zone, drivers watch out for children who are walking or bicycling to school. “They may be thinking more about school than traveling there safely.”
Florida enacted school zone speed limits and restrictions to protect the safety of Florida’s children, teachers, parents, and other pedestrians and bicyclists. (The Florida law is covered in: Florida Statute §316.1895, Florida Statute §316.305, Florida Statute §316.306.)
Many motorists fail to adhere to school zone safety laws. This failure can lead to accidents and significant injuries that can be long-lasting or permanent.
Experts attribute pedestrian and bicycle accidents around school zones to drivers failing to adhere to stop signs. Many times, distraction plays a significant role in school zone accidents. A recent survey showed that almost 7 out of 10 drivers admitted to having participated in distracted driving practices while driving.
Distracted drivers are negligent drivers. According to Florida law, drivers have a duty to act in a reasonable way and as any prudent person would under the same or similar circumstances. If they do not and strike someone in a school zone, they may be found to be negligent and responsible for damages.
