Senior Drivers - AARP's Driver Safety Course For Refreshing Driving Skills
January 21, 2014 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareAARP (American Association of Retired Persons) is offering its 2014 safety classes for seniors age 55 and above in southwest Florida. These classes are designed as refresher courses for seniors to help reduce the possibility of seniors being involved in vehicle crashes.
Why take a safety course? AARP says, "Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads traveled every day. Some drivers age 50-plus have never looked back since they got their first driver's license, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills."
By taking the senior driving safety course not only will seniors learn how to "manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time, they will learn such things as specific techniques on minimizing blind spots, maintaining proper following distances, safe ways to change lanes, the proper use of the new technology in cars today, and ways to monitor their own and others' driving skills and capabilities, and also be eligible for lower vehicle insurance rates."
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) reported that in 2011 (latest available statistics):
- Total U.S. recorded fatalities - 32,367
Total seniors (55+) - 9,375
Percent of total for seniors - 29%
- Total FL recorded fatalities - 2,398
Total seniors (55+) - 737
Percent of total for seniors - 30%
Total age 16-24 - 432
Percent of total for 16-24 - 18%
"As a personal injury attorney, I encourage seniors to take advantage of the AARP safe driver classes," says Attorney Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.
The senior safe driver course may be taken on-line or be instructor-led. To find instructor-led classes in Naples, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Estero, Port Charlotte, North Port, and Englewood go to the AARP website - www.aarp.org Pre-registration is required.
